Dick Gabriel Podcast

Dick Gabriel has some mathematic and artificial intelligence degrees. Also, he has a LISP company. The podcast is an interview with Dick Gabriel that talks about the relation between LISP and artificial intelligence. He started describing briefly what LISP is. For Dick Gabriel, one of the principal characteristics of LISP is the use of lists and functions. Also, the program as data and data as program is another foundation of LISP. Later, he mentioned that the fact that user can define functions as it was built in the language is a great advantage of using LISP. Regarding artificial intelligence, he said that the artificial intelligence researchers want to write programs for specific tasks, so they want to find a language that could fit their needs. Then, using LISP let them design and build their own language, making an extension of LISP, in order to have a personalized language that covers all their needs. Moreover, another thing that makes LISP different is the ...

Beating the averages

Currently, there exist a lot of programming languages that gives us different functionalities, but how do we have to select the correct programming language for our projects? The reading Beating the Averages talks mainly about how to successfully select a programming language and how that correct decision about the programming language could give you a significant advantage over your competition. The author tells his personal story leading a technological startup. One thing that I like about the reading is the advices that constantly the author mentions about managing a startup. He said that the way that a startup could have success is being different that your competitors. So, in the case that he is telling, he and his partner, knowing practically nothing about business, take a technical choice that gives them a great advantage. He said that almost anyone used Lisp to develop software, but for them it was a great and powerful option. The fact that almost anyone used Lisp...

Semicolon Wars

Semicolon wars it’s a very interesting reading that tell us, using analogies, the differences between several programming languages. The author compares the different programming languages with a war. He said that every programming language has its own features, although each of these has several common characteristics.   In the other hand, he also compares the programming languages with the natural languages, arguing that in natural languages if you have more is better, contrary to programming languages. Even though, programmers design and develop new programming languages in order to get better tools to build more powerful software. Moreover, he said something very interesting, there is no best programming language, each of them has pros and cons. Later, he said that there are 4 kind of programming languages: declarative, functional, object oriented and imperative. Nowadays, the new programming languages embrace the object-oriented paradigm.   Besides that, the author s...

About me

My name is Oscar Allan Ruiz Toledo. I'm 23 years old. At the present, I'm studying the 6th semester of B.S. Computer Science & Technology at ITESM CEM.
